* Fair-use compute is a per-month ceiling on the underlying Anthropic API cost consumed by your agents. Cost above the ceiling is billed as metered overage at 2× the excess, in whole-dollar increments, on the same invoice as your subscription. Example: a Pro customer with $50 of API cost in a period is billed $20 of overage ($50 − $40 = $10 excess × 2). Annual plans receive 12× the monthly ceiling. Shopify-billed subscriptions are hard-capped per period at $500 / $2,000 / $6,000 for Starter / Pro / Business respectively; Stripe-billed subscriptions are uncapped (contact us if you require a hard cap). A conversation is one chat session between your customer and the AI agent. It counts as one conversation regardless of how many messages are exchanged — whether it's 2 messages or 20. Opening the widget without sending a message doesn't count.
Different AI models have different costs. Each conversation uses model-weighted units against your plan limit: Haiku = 1 unit, Sonnet = 3 units, Opus = 15 units. For example, on the Pro plan (2,500 units/month), you could have ~833 Sonnet conversations or 2,500 Haiku conversations, or any mix.
On the Free plan, new conversations are blocked at the limit. On paid plans, conversations continue without interruption — there is no per-conversation overage fee. Billing for usage above your plan happens through the AI compute ceiling described next, which is the actual binding limit on a paid plan.
Each paid plan has a fair-use AI compute ceiling — $10/mo on Starter, $40/mo on Pro, $120/mo on Business — measured in U.S. Dollars of underlying Claude API cost. When your cumulative AI cost in a billing period exceeds the ceiling, the excess is multiplied by 2× and billed in whole-dollar increments on the same invoice as your subscription. Example: a Pro customer with $50 of compute in a month is billed an extra $20 ($50 − $40 = $10 excess × 2 = $20). Sub-dollar overage carries forward to the next whole dollar. Stripe-billed customers see this on their next monthly invoice; Shopify-billed customers see it as a usage line item on their next Shopify invoice (capped at $500 / Starter, $2,000 / Pro, $6,000 / Business per period). Your dashboard shows accrual in real time so there are no surprises.
A flat per-conversation rate would penalize short, efficient conversations and subsidize long token-heavy ones. The fair-use ceiling lets typical customers stay well inside their plan price for unlimited conversations, while customers with unusually heavy token usage (long multi-turn sessions, large document context, heavy tool use) pay proportionally to what those conversations actually cost us at the model provider. Most customers never trip the ceiling.
Most chatbot platforms charge per message (each back-and-forth). We charge per conversation (one session, unlimited messages). A typical 5-message conversation would cost 5 credits elsewhere but just 1 unit here. This means longer, more helpful conversations don't cost you more.
